Our Magnificent Building

With its splendid Art Deco facade, Nell Gwynn House was designed in the ’30s by architect G. Kay Green as a glamorous central London home for those who travelled or lived outside the capital. In addition to the sumptuous apartments, the building hosted a restaurant-ballroom for 250 people, a cocktail bar, a lounge and a music club.

Celebrated British designers Tim Gosling and Phil Sturdy have captured the Belle Epoque glamour and heritage of the building’s original style in a beautiful redesign. “I have known and loved Nell Gwynn House for many years, so it has been both a privilege and delight for the Gosling Design team to restore it to its former glory.”

Nell Gywnn

Above the main entrance, at the level of the 2nd floor, is a statue of Nell Gwynn with a Cavalier King Charles spaniel at her feet. It is believed to be the only statue of a royal mistress anywhere in the capital city.

Daisy Burrell

(1892–1982) A portrait of actress Daisy Burrell by Bassano around 1911. The famous actress of the silent film era starred in The Valley of Fear (1916), an early Sherlock Holmes film, Little Women (1917) and many others.

Vera Atkins CBE

(1908–2000) Romanian-born British Intelligence Officer who worked in the French Section of Britain’s covert Special Operations Executive during World War II. Atkins recruited and trained more than 400 secret agents to fight the Nazis.

Tina Moore

First wife of England football team captain Bobby Moore. Tina and Bobby became football’s first celebrity couple when England won the World Cup in 1966 (pictured celebrating) – the only time England has won the trophy.

Diana Dors

Alan Merrill

(1951–2020) American rock singer and songwriter, wrote ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll’ in 1975 while living in Nell Gwynn House. His band The Arrows performed the song on the show 45 after which The Arrows were offered a weekly ITV series Arrows.

The Courier

This dramatic Cold War spy thriller (2020), directed by Dominic Cooke and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, was partly filmed at Nell Gwynn House. The film was based on a true story.

Sir Bruce Forsyth OBE

(1928–2017) Legendary British entertainer Sir Bruce Forsyth OBE had a career spanning more than 70 years. Best known for hosting Sunday Night at the London Palladium, The Generation Game and the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing (above with co-host Tess Daly).

British intelligence officer Vera Atkins CBE and social reformist and slave abolitionist Frederick Douglass are commemorated by heritage plaques on the side of the building
